Guillem Ferran – Where memory used to sit

An icon of popular culture, with new approaches that spark the imagination.

A PhD holder in the field of communications and a lecturer in product design, he is currently the coordinator of product design at the School of Design and Fine Arts of Catalonia (ESDAPC) on the Llotja campus. He has worked on product design for Novell Puig, Estudi Moliné, Emiliana and Decathlon. Recognised for his work as a designer and art director for SMEs, he has gained a reputation for his work on local schemes, for which he contributed to the design and craftwork of projects such as Oficis Singulars (Singular Trades), Artesanies de la Ruta del Tequila (Crafts on the Tequila Route) in Mexico and Crea2 for Lleida City Council.

The tradition popular bulrush chair is an object that has formed part of our nostalgic imagery. In the past, it has been interpreted in different parts of Europe. In the 1960s it could be found in rationalist apartments in Cadaqués, whilst in the 1980s it was widely used by Italian designers. The object has been updated in a number of types of seating: three-, five- and six-legged stools, chairs with hangers, chairs with a clothes valet, etc. These are new ways of reintroducing this material and craft in the market. The project was carried out with one of the last manufacturers in Spain to make this product: Casa Constante.
