Straddling between tradition and modernity to come up with new imagery for the pitcher as an object and icon.
Museu del Càntir d’Argentona (Argentona Pitcher Museum) is a public institution run by a municipal board of trustees. The museum is the only one of its kind in the world to specialise in pitchers. Its collections are made up of more than 4,000 pieces that stretch from the Bronze Age to Picasso, through to big collections of earthenware from the 14th to 18th centuries, numerous pieces from the19th century and the main body of the collection, made up of traditional, popular earthenware from the whole of the 20th century.
The Festa del Càntir (Pitcher Festival), recovered in 1951, is always held on the morning of Saint Dominic’s Day on August 4. On this morning, more traditional events are held, such as the renewal of the town’s vows by its mayor, the blessing of the waters of the fountain of Saint Dominic, the blessing and sale of the “pitcher of the year”, and the games of strength and wit themed on water and pitchers. For a few years now, the pitcher of the year is commissioned to a prominent author from the field of design, architecture or craft.
